CEI Medical Centre
CEI Medical centre is a health facility, started in 2014, and operated and managed by Community Empowerment Initiatives (CEI-Uganda)-a charity registered in Uganda. CEI works with women to empower families and communities. CEI works through existing women structures of the National Women’s Council to provide an independent and united forum through which women could access health information and services particularly those at the grassroots/village level. CEI Project area is Mityana District located 65 Km away from Kampala City on the Western Route towards Fortpotal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
CEI Community Health Exchange Programe Approach
A 35 homes (households) model is adopted by CEI Medical Centre. Using this approach CEI medical centre, empowers five(5) women’s representatives of the National Women’s Council at village level, through mobilization and advocacy skills training, to sensitize and oversee other Six (6) households, on health and socio-economic development issues. This five women village level structure works in close collaboration with the Village Health Teams at village level. This structure is also empowered with information and negotiation skills to enable them tap into the existing Government health services (Health Centres III and II).
This model is used to mobilize women at grassroots level to access; i) health services, ii) development information, and iii) skills, -these enable them to tap into resource systems of Government and development partners. Through this system, CEI reaches out to; mothers, adolescent girls, domestic workers, landless and voiceless women, petty traders, market vendors, food vendors in markets, shop operators, and village/cell level women entrepreneurs.
CEI is currently piloting this model in Mityana District for eventual scalability across the country. By reaching out to rural and urban women, through the village level model, CEI is desirous of ensuring that the lived realities of women, at the lowest administrative level possible, count in influencing health policies, practice and decision-making processes of Government and development partners.
